Man dead, another person injured in construction accident in Westmoreland County

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. — One man was killed and another person was injured in a construction accident in North Huntingdon, Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson confirmed to Channel 11.

Emergency crews were called to the scene before 11 a.m. Tuesday on Route 993 at the Water Street Bridge, near Quality Way.

The person who died has been identified as Brian Keefer, 53, of Indian Head, Pa.

Another man was injured was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital in fair condition, Carson said. The North Huntingdon Police Department states he’s since been released from the hospital.

A bridge rehabilitation project just began along Route 993 on Monday.

Carson called the incident a “freak accident.”

Chief Rizzo said the operator of a truck he said was cleaning the bridge, had started moving forward, but then put the vehicle in reverse, then ran over the one man, killing him.

Pennsylvania State Police were on scene Tuesday afternoon doing accident reconstruction. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is also conducting an investigation, while the North Huntingdon Detectives Unit is the lead investigating agency.
