Per police, two pedestrians, a 12-year-old boy and an adult woman, were found injured on the sidewalk of Monticello Street, which is adjacent to Westinghouse Academy. A district official says the student was waiting for transportation with a one-to-one classroom assistant when they were hit.
Investigators say the boy sustained “traumatic injuries” to his lower extremities. He was given whole blood in the field due to his injuries and blood loss, then taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Upon arriving at the hospital, he was immediately taken into surgery.
The injured woman is in stable condition and is being evaluated at a hospital.
Police say the driver involved stayed on scene and cooperated with officers.
Our crew on scene saw investigators searching a red SUV resting on the sidewalk along Monticello Street before it was towed away.
One witness told us the SUV was trying to avoid another car that was driving erratically, ending up on the sidewalk where a group of students were standing. The witness said the students were gathered on the sidewalk after a fight.
“They were on the sidewalk right there by the wall. They were actually up against the wall. It was so quick when it happened; they didn’t get a chance to get out of the way. It’s not like she was really going fast; she just avoided the car, it was just a quick swerve,” they said.
But, police say the investigation so far indicates the driver was traveling south on North Murtland Street, then made a right onto Monticello Street. After the turn, police think she continued tracking to the right, which caused her to jump the curb and hit the pedestrians.
Investigators say alcohol intoxication is a potential factor in the crash.
The Collision Investigation Unit responded to the scene and continues to investigate by reviewing all available evidence, including available videos and witness statements.
