MURRYSVILLE, Pa. — An attorney who was involved in a police standoff over the weekend in Westmoreland County has died, closing criminal prosecution against him, officials say.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office released a report Thursday morning that Robert C. Klingensmith, 61, died on Wednesday following a self-inflicted injury.
Police showed up to arrest Klingensmith at his office on Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville on Saturday. He was accused of stealing more than $300,000 from a deceased client’s estate from 2021 to 2024.
While trying to enter the office, officers heard the sound of a gunshot inside, a Westmoreland County District Attorney spokesperson says.
After a brief standoff, Klingensmith reportedly exited the office with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and refused to respond to officers’ commands. He was tased and taken to a trauma hospital.
Westmoreland County detectives charged Klingensmith on May 29 with theft and financial exploitation of an older adult or care-dependent person.
The spokesperson says several other victims have since come forward with allegations against Klingensmith, but because of his death, the criminal prosecution has ended, and the case is closed.
