Missing teen with autism seen walking away from Pittsburgh Carmalt found safe

Authorities searching for missing Carmalt student, sources say

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police briefly descended on the city’s Brookline neighborhood to search for a missing boy with autism on Tuesday afternoon.

Law enforcement sources told Channel 11 the search was for an 8th-grade student seen on video walking away from Pittsburgh Public Schools’ Carmalt PreK-8 around 2:10 p.m.

A PPS spokesperson says the student who went missing is a Bridges Academy student assigned to a satellite program at Carmalt. The student left without authorization through a staff-designated door, which does not have an alarm like all other exits.

Initially, teachers started searching within the building because they didn’t know he had left the building. He was later located by his transportation driver on Pioneer Avenue and was taken to his Wilkinsburg home.

The district spokesperson says the incident is being reviewed to ensure “that all safety protocols and building access procedures continue to be followed with fidelity.”
