62-year-old man hit, killed by vehicle in Westmoreland County

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. — A man is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Westmoreland County on Wednesday.

A Westmoreland County 911 supervisor says emergency crews were called to the intersection of New York Avenue and Greensburg Road in Lower Burrell at 1:08 p.m. The coroner was also requested to respond.

Lower Burrell police say the crash happened in the 600 block of Greensburg Road “during the early morning hours.”

Preliminary investigations show a vehicle was traveling westbound when it hit and killed a man. At around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman identified the victim as Harry J. Thomas, 62, of Plum.

Investigators focused their work around a white pickup truck.

“I heard sirens. Guy was up there standing by his white truck. [He] said ‘I hit him’ and he didn’t know where he went,” neighbor Walter “Butch” Kelly said.

There was also a shoe visible in the middle of the road.

Neighbors told Channel 11 it belonged to the victim; a man they say walks the street frequently.

They also told said speed is a major issue on Greensburg Road but investigators have not identified that as a factor.

The driver is known and is cooperating with the investigation, Lower Burrell police say.

Initial reports from Pennsylvania State Police indicated that the driver stayed on scene after the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Detective Aulerish at 724-339-4287, ext. 266.

Greensburg Road was closed in the area for several hours for the investigation.
