Emergency crews battle house fire in Washington County, deal with hotspots for hours

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Emergency crews battled a house fire in Washington County.

A Washington County 911 supervisor says crews were called to the 300 block of Edgewood Avenue in Canton Township at 7:19 p.m. Saturday.

Multiple fire departments responded and were working to extinguish the fire, the supervisor says.

The building is reported to have suffered a partial collapse.

No injuries were reported.

Canton Township Fire Chief Dominic Sicchitano tells Channel 11 that crews were dispatched at 7:20 p.m. Saturday for a smoke investigation.

Within about 30 seconds of dispatch, the response was updated to a house fire.

Crews were on scene within three minutes of dispatch, Sicchitano says. They arrived to find a large amount of fire in the home’s rear and all three floors, as well as through the roof.

Crews began to extinguish the fire and conducted a quick search of the first floor before conditions rapidly deteriorated.

At that point, a phone call from a neighbor confirmed that there was nobody at home, Sicchitano says.

Crews worked from about 7:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. Sunday to completely extinguish all hot spots.

Six different departments were on scene, and other mutual aid departments came and covered their areas while crews operated, Sicchitano says.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is investigating. A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The American Red Cross is assisting the home’s two occupants.

Editor’s Note: This story has been corrected to reflect the address for the fire. Initial reports from Washington County 911 dispatchers indicated that crews were called to the 50 block of Hawkins Street.
