The explosion occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday at The Time Brewpub inside the former Walnut Ridge school building on Mount Vernon Drive. The building was renovated into several businesses, including a gym and a barber shop.

Ellwood City Fire Chief Rick Meyers described the scene crews first pulled up to as “chaos.”

Neighbors near the pub along Mt Vernon Drive said they were jolted awake by the explosion.

“I was sound asleep, and I heard an explosion, which of course scared me,” said neighbor Evan Westlund, who lives just across the street from the pub. “My house shook, my cabinets were actually open in my house.”

“I was sleeping, and next minute I heard a boom,” added Nick Umstead, who lives a couple of minutes away from the pub.

Meyers said the surrounding businesses don’t seem to have damage, but at this point, the integrity of the entire building is compromised.

Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court tells Channel 11 that a possible gas leak caused the explosion, but an exact cause is still under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
