YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Three police officers are dead and two officers are injured after they were shot while trying to serve an arrest warrant in York County, officials said during a press conference.
All officers are from the Northern York Regional Police Department, officials said.
According to the Associated Press, the investigation began in the area of North Codorus Township, about 115 miles (185 km) west of Philadelphia, not far from the Maryland line. The first 911 call came in around 2:10 p.m., for a domestic-related investigation.
The suspect is believed to be dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooter has not been identified at this time.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference. “We grieve the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, who served this Commonwealth, who served this country.”
AP reports that the incident unfolded on a rural road that winds through an agricultural area with a red barn and farm fields.

Gov. Josh Shapiro rushed to the scene.
“Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County,” Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis said in a social media post.
This is the same community reeling from another police shooting that happened seven months ago. York County Patrolman Andrew Duarte died while responding to a hospital after a gunman took hostages.
“There are simply no words I can offer to assuage the grief that this community has experienced and, unfortunately, will continue to experience. The grief will be unbearable, but we will bear it,” said the Commissioner of state police, Col Christopher Paris.
Governor Shapiro has spent time with the family members, offering a measure of comfort. He is reiterating that this senseless violence has to end.
“This kind of violence isn’t okay. We need to do better as a society. We need to help people who think that picking up a gun is the answer to resolving disputes,” said Governor Shapiro.
According to the Associated Press, this was one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania police this century. In 2009, three Pittsburgh officers responding to a domestic disturbance were ambushed and shot to death by a man in a bulletproof vest.
