Jamal Brooks, acting as his own attorney, tried to convince a jury that he wasn’t the one to fire 16 gunshots at Monroeville Police Sgt. James MacDonald in January of 2024.

He argued that officers arrested the wrong man, but a jury didn’t agree and found him guilty of attempted homicide of the sergeant, and all other charges related to the shooting.
Since Brooks waived his right to a defense attorney, he questioned MacDonald on the witness stand on the first day of his trial.
The sergeant went over the timeline of that night.

There was a 911 call for an armed robbery of the Crumbl Cookies in Monroeville, so the sergeant went out on patrol and saw Brooks, who matched the description of the suspect.
When MacDonald tried to pull over to talk to Brooks, Brooks began firing, sending bullets through the windshield and his car.
MacDonald was hit by two bullets and still has one lodged inside him to this day.
