PITTSBURGH — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Pittsburgh’s Hill District on Wednesday afternoon.

The Allegheny County Police Department says Pittsburgh Police were sent to the 100 block of Hyman Place after a security guard encountered an armed man while patrolling the Oak Hill Apartment Complex. The man reportedly pointed the gun at the security guard before running.

Officers then encountered the man on Bentley Street and Devilliers Street, but he ran again and around a dozen officers chased him to an alley behind Family Dollar.

The man hid behind a dumpster near Wylie Avenue, eventually emerging with the gun, county police said. He continued to approach officers while armed despite repeated commands for him to drop the weapon.

ACPD says one officer shot the male. It’s not known how many shots he fired.

Officers on scene immediately rendered aid to the man until medics arrived. He later died at the hospital.

ACPD’s Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the shooting. The status of the officer involved in the incident will be determined by Pittsburgh Police in accordance with their policies and procedures.
