Police, fire and EMS were called to the area of the Sunoco on Butler Street between 50th and 51st Streets around 3:30 p.m.
A police spokesperson tells Channel 11 that the man was shot and killed after an altercation at the gas pumps. He was later identified as Michael Ehlinger, 56, of Stanton Heights.
The suspected shooter called 911 after the incident and stayed on scene. He’s since been taken into custody and transported to Pittsburgh Police headquarters.
The location and timing of the situation are causing concern for neighbors. It’s a busy location and shots were fired right in the middle of the day.
“I mean, it’s crazy that it happened in the middle of the day. Like, broad daylight,” Amanda Prince said. She lives in Lawrenceville and goes to that gas station almost every day.
“I typically feel safe. I run around here. I walk around here,” she said.
A gas station employee told Channel 11 he’d like to see an increase in police presence. Others we spoke to weren’t sure that would prevent situations like this.
“With an incident like that happening, it kind of makes you rethink,” Mary Salinas said.
“I don’t know if that would prevent every altercation that could possibly happen,” Nilam Kalawadaa said.
