At least 21-year-old hawk banded in Pennsylvania found injured over 1,000 miles away in Nova Scotia

A red-tailed hawk that once lived in Pennsylvania has found its way to Nova Scotia!

Hope For Wildlife, a wildlife rehabilitation organization in Nova Scotia, Canada, has been caring for a red-tailed hawk with a broken wing.

While examining the bird, they found a metal federal band. Upon some digging, they found the bird was banded in Pennsylvania back in 2004. The Pennsylvania Game Commission says the bird was tagged in November 2004 in Berlinsville — over 1,000 miles from Nova Scotia.

Hope For Wildlife says this is quite an amazing find since in the wild red-tailed hawks often only live for about 10 to 15 years. This bird, if banded as a juvenile, is at least 21 years old.

Additionally, the game commission says red-tail hawks don’t migrate every year or only go short distances. A trip like this isn’t unheard of, but officials say it’s “certainly a feat.”

The rescue hopes to return the hawk to the wild eventually.
