Man hit, killed by tractor-trailer in Coraopolis

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — A man is dead after being hit by a tractor-trailer in Coraopolis.

A 911 dispatcher confirmed to Channel 11 that police, fire and medics were called to 5th Avenue and Main Street at 3:10 p.m.

The borough manager confirmed to Channel 11 that first responders were on scene for a crash involving a pedestrian, then later said the male pedestrian was killed.

It’s the second deadly pedestrian crash just this month. Channel 11 previously reported that Ulysses Montalvo was struck and killed just a block away from Thursday’s scene.

“These people just speed around here like it’s Interstate 79 and it isn’t,” a neighbor named Patty told Channel 11. She lives near the site of the crash. “It’s heartbreaking.”

“I actually saw the man under the truck. He was already covered up. It’s just a sad day for Coraopolis. I can’t believe this,” another neighbor, Patty McGuane, said.

McGuane told Channel 11 she knew Ulysses Montalvo well and has known this latest victim for her entire life.

“He was just a very nice man. He was always walking his dog down there,” she said.

Borough officials confirmed to Channel 11 that the victim is an “older” man. He was hit while walking from a gas station across the street in the direction of the Copeland Funeral Home.

According to Police Chief Jason Stewart, surveillance video shows the tractor-trailer stopped at a red light. Then, the light turns green and the driver pulls into the intersection, hitting the man.

While it doesn’t appear speed was a factor in this crash, neighbors told us traffic is a major problem.

“About a week and a half ago, I almost got hit in my alleyway coming out. Guy was coming around the corner at least 40, 50 miles per hour,” Patty said.

Borough Mayor Michael Dixon posted on Facebook saying:

“Our community is grieving. Recently, two of our neighbors here in Coraopolis were involved in traffic tragedies that should give all of us pause. To the families and loved ones of the victims, I extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the Borough of Coraopolis. No words can fill the void, but please know that your pain is felt by all of us, and your loss is shared by the entire community.

At the same time, we must be clear and resolute: this must not continue. Every person in Coraopolis, whether walking, driving, or cycling, deserves to feel safe on our streets.

I have directed our police department to immediately review the circumstances surrounding these incidents. We are evaluating high-risk intersections, lighting conditions, speed enforcement, and pedestrian safety measures.

But safety is not the responsibility of the government alone. It is a shared responsibility. I ask EVERY driver in Coraopolis: SLOW DOWN, stay alert, and remember that the few seconds you save are never worth a life. I also ask every pedestrian: please use crosswalks and remain aware, especially in busy corridors.

Our commitment is unwavering. We will mourn, we will support the families, and we will act to prevent future tragedies. Together, with compassion and resolve, we can and must make our streets safer for everyone."

The identity of the person killed has not been released. It’s unclear if the driver will face any charges.
