Man runs to nearby home for help after being shot in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — A man was injured in a shooting in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood late Sunday night.

Police were called to the 5100 block of Cypress Street around 11:30 p.m.

Patty Caldwell lives on the street with her husband, and heard the gunfire.

“When the first one went off, I stopped dead. I was playing games on my computer, and I was like ‘what the heck was that’ and then a few minutes later I kept hearing it again and it got really loud and I’m like this is gunshots,” she said.

About a half hour later, Caldwell said she and her husband heard knocking at their back door and called 911.

“They came through the house and the policeman said ‘can we go out your back door? ’” Caldwell recalled. “I had it all closed up with the blinds and everything and I opened the blinds and there he was, lying on the deck.”

Pittsburgh police say the man was found shot in the head. Police said he was alert and talking with medics. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Caldwell told Channel 11 the alleged victim came through the neighbors window, climbed over her fence, and went underneath their porch. A gun was later found stashed under the porch. She said the victim then crawled onto her porch, where she later heard the knocking.

Police report finding multiple shell casings on the ground as well as a gun.

“I’m telling you I could not stop shaking,” Caldwell said. “Police actually asked ‘do you need EMS?’ and I said ‘no, I’ll be ok.’”

Hazel Gregg lives in the neighborhood and said the gun violence concerns her.

“I’m pretty uncomfortable and concerned about gun violence in general, of course across the country and in the city too, but yeah, it’s really unfortunate,” she said.

“This isn’t the first time there’s been incidents over there,” Caldwell said. “I mean, there was another night. We had police out here at 3 o’clock in the morning because there was arguing going on and it’s been for this type of neighborhood. It’s not where it should be at all.”

Channel 11 was able to confirm that the address where the shooting took place is available on Airbnb. No one has been arrested at this time, and police are now looking for a suspect.
