MUNHALL, Pa. — A man was shot by an officer inside a holding cell at the Munhall Police Department early Monday.
Late Sunday night around 11:30 p.m., police arrested a 38-year-old man in the 100 block of East 18th Avenue on domestic violence charges. He was taken to the Munhall Police Department and was placed in a holding cell for processing.
Investigators said about an hour later, officers saw the man trying to cover up the camera in the cell. Two officers then went inside the cell and told him to stop, but police said the man refused and began to fight with officers.
Allegheny County Police said both officers deployed tasers, but the man “continued to engage with the officers.” One of the officers then fired multiple shots, hitting the man in the torso.
The man was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition.
No officers were injured.
Allegheny County Police are investigating the incident.
Channel 11 asked Allegheny County Police if the suspect went for the officer’s gun, and a spokesperson told us that is something detectives are still investigating.
We also have reached out to Munhall police and the Borough’s leadership to find out what the policy is for officers bringing their weapons into a holding cell. No one from Munhall has responded.
