Man’s body found at scene of 2-alarm fire at Sheraden auto garage, officials say

PITTSBURGH — A man‘s body was found at the scene of a two-alarm fire in Pittsburgh‘s Sheraden neighborhood.

Public safety officials say the body was found Sunday at an auto garage in the 700 block of Hillsboro Street. That’s where a fire broke out overnight Saturday.

The building partially collapsed, causing the roof and third floor to fall onto the second floor.

One man was unaccounted for after the fire. Recovery efforts began around 1 p.m. Sunday. The body was found just over an hour later.

The man whose body was found has not yet been identified. It’s unclear if the body is that of the man who was unaccounted for.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Channel 11 spoke with neighbors who were grieving the man whose body they believe was found.

“Our community is grieving today and will continue to grieve for part of a soul that we lost,” one person said.

Another friend said the victim was “that guy who was just so welcoming. He had a good spirit. He was so welcoming.”

People told Channel 11 the man believed to be the victim owned the auto garage and had provided people with home and outdoor appliances for nearly 20 years.

“He had a good soul, but to see what happened in his life is heartbreaking, and that is a soul lost,” Lydiah Wanyoike said.

Community members and family stopped by the site Sunday to pay their respects and lay flowers, as well as personal notes.

“To see the community coming together for one soul, it speaks volumes. May he rest in peace. He will be missed,” Wanyoike said.

Officials say demolition work at the building has been paused and will resume Monday.
