PITTSBURGH — A massive sinkhole opened in East Liberty Monday.
Neighbors in East Liberty are reacting to the large sinkhole that was noticed along Rippey Street – at the intersection of North Beatty Street.
“I came home yesterday for lunch happened to see the news. This was all barricaded and I was completely shock at what I saw,” one neighbor said.
Channel 11 saw crews out today analyzing the hole. For right now, part of Rippey Street is blocked off.
“I’m glad I wasn’t parked there when it decided to open up,” Brian Little said.
Pittsburgh Water says it’s a private property issue. We’re told a private sewer line broke so it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to fix it. We talked to the property manager because the homeowners are out of town. He explained what caused it.
“The waste line that leaves the property and any sort of hole in that pipe will eventually erode as time goes on and gets worse and worse until there’s nothing left to support it and takes everything else with it,” Little said.
Little said they have an emergency plumbing service to take the necessary steps to fix the problem. At this time, they don’t know exactly when it will be fixed but they are hoping it will be soon.
Pittsburgh Water said the public sewer infrastructure is still in good condition.
