PITTSBURGH — The Monongahela Incline has reopened just in time for Light Up Night.

Riders were welcomed back at 5 p.m. on Friday.

The incline has been closed since Nov. 1, when nearly 30 passengers had to be rescued after the cars on the Mon Incline abruptly stopped.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) said the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and PennDOT’s State Safety Oversight office had completed all necessary inspections.

“The Mon Incline isn’t just a way up and down Mount Washington - it’s part of our regional identity,” said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. “After thorough repairs, testing, and inspections, we’re proud to bring this historic landmark safely back into service.”

The incline will run on its normal schedule of 5:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 8:45 a.m. to midnight on Sundays and Holidays.

Business owners on Mount Washington were excited to hear the news.

“They want to see Grandview. They want to see that beautiful view. They want to come and get an ice cream cone. They want to get a coffee. They love it up here,” business owner Todd Difiore said.

Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith was also happy to hear about the reopening, saying the Mon Incline is crucial to Shiloh Street businesses.

“There’s a lot of people who contribute a lot to the City of Pittsburgh and to Allegheny County that use that incline,” Kail-Smith said.
