Mount Washington Tunnel to close for 8 months for ‘critical’ upgrades

Mount Washington Tunnel

PITTSBURGH — The Mount Washington Transit Tunnel is going to close for around eight months, according to Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

PRT announced Monday that the tunnel will close on Feb. 23 so crews can perform “critical infrastructure upgrades.”

Those upgrades include replacing tracks, restoring the roadway inside the tunnel and repairing overhead electric lines that power light-rail vehicles.

The tunnel will reopen once the work is done and the tracks pass inspection, which PRT expects to take eight months.

In the meantime, bus and rail services will change since the tunnel is a key connection between South Hills Junction and Station Square Station.

PRT laid out the service changes in January. The changes include temporary stops, a special rail route and a temporary free fare zone expansion.

This construction is part of PRT’s multi-year $150 million investment in the region’s light-rail infrastructure. The current phase of work focuses on the system’s long-term safety, reliability, and efficiency.
