NWS confirms 5th tornado during Sunday storms in Southwestern Pennsylvania

HADDENVILLE, Pa. — The National Weather Service confirmed the area’s fifth EF-1 tornado from Sunday’s severe weather in Haddenville, which is part of Menallen Townshi

Lisa Martini and Tom Broadwater’s home had a lot of damage, both inside and out.

“We were just happy that we weren’t here,” Martini told Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek.

They were out to lunch on Sunday, and got a call from their neighbor after the storm blew through. Martini said her parents got to the home first and found the doors busted open, furniture thrown all over the house, the back window shattered and busted out, and bricks inside the home causing damage to a wall -- and even the couch. They said it was almost like someone broke into their home.

They are so glad they weren’t home, but they were worried for their dog, Keizer.

“He’s my baby, and him being as high strung and high anxiety dog as he is, I knew he went through a lot, especially being here by himself. It’s heartbreaking,” Martini said.

Luckily, Keizer is okay.

The National Weather Service said a lot of elements all came together to cause so many tornados in one storm.

“We had a lot of shear, a lot of instability, and everything kind of lined up perfectly for us with some clearing in the morning and a very volatile environment,” said Meteorologist Matt Brudy with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. “When you get that to overlap well, you can get several tornadoes out of one system and that’s so far what we’ve seen from this one.”

People all along Kaider Road near Menallen Township are now dealing with the clean up.

“Well, we’ve been cutting trees, cleaning up, but basically, my pole here, the transformer blew off the pole, snapped, we definitely lost power,” said Sylvester Fronczek.

Fronczek is using generators and batteries to keep things running until power is back on, which might not be until Wednesday.

“Ready for that power to come back on?” Havranek asked.

“Yeah, I think so,” laughed Fronczek.

The National Weather Service is still surveying damage. We’ll keep you updated if any more tornadoes are confirmed from Sunday’s storms.

On Tuesday, the NWS confirmed the other four tornadoes that touched down on Sunday:

  • An EF-1 near Donegal, Westmoreland County
  • An EF-1 near Ligonier, Westmoreland County
  • An EF-1 near Josephine, Indiana County
  • An EF-1 near Wilpen, Westmoreland County

The four tornadoes confirmed Tuesday had estimated wind speeds of 100-105 mph, according to the NWS.
