A UPMC spokesperson said a driver rear-ended a parked vehicle in the South Aiken garage. The vehicle that was hit was pushed into a concrete barrier, which fell to the ground.
Channel 11 was first on the scene as police taped off the garage until tow trucks could remove both vehicles.
No injuries were reported.
A UPMC employee told us that the crash sounded like an explosion. Others were glad that no one was hurt.
“I am thinking, thank god nobody was underneath that. I’m thinking, thank god nobody got hurt, and I’m thinking thank god it was right by the hospital,” Carmella Sanpietro of Shadyside said.
“For all of the things that could happen, this is the best, worst-case scenario,” said Lauren Sutton, who works nearby.
Crews spent a couple of hours securing the cars, clearing debris, and then getting the cars towed away. The Buick was destroyed, the hood crumpled up onto the shattered windshield and all the airbags went off.
