PITTSBURGH — People Gas is sharing tips on how people can stay safe and warm during the winter.

The company said it wants customers to use their gas efficiently and safely.

Here are some of their tips on how to do that:

  • Keep space around furnaces and other gas-powered appliances
  • Avoid storing flammable or using flammable producers near gas or heat-producing appliances
  • Protect gas meters from the elements by removing snow and ice from them with a broom or brush. Do not use a hard object. People Gas said meters have to open air around them so you should not wrap them with blankets or plastic.
  • Conserve gas by lowering the thermostat and building up in blankets in a smart way
  • Do not drop your thermostat too low because it can lead to frozen or burst water pipes
  • Replace your furnace filter. Peoples recommends doing this at least three times during the heating seizure
  • Ensure your indoor and outdoor vents are clear from obstructions such as furniture, lint, dust snow, ice and even birds nests

Peoples Gas said winter brings a higher chance of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure.

Because CO is odorless and colorless residents are reminded to install detectors in their living spaces. Anyone who already has a CO detector should ensure they are still working properly and replace the batteries.

“Anyone can take small steps that make a big difference, such as putting a new filter in the furnace or testing CO detectors this fall,” said Ron King, Peoples Vice President of Operations & Maintenance. “We encourage everyone in our community to take the time to ensure their appliances are operating safely and efficiently.”
