Emergency crews were called to the 3700 block of Parviss Street around 5 a.m. for reports of a house fire, public safety officials say.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the house’s top floors and roof.

The man who lives there was thought to be inside because his vehicle was parked outside, officials say.

Firefighters searched inside and, around 6 a.m., found the 64-year-old man dead in a second-floor bedroom.

The fire was under control by 7 a.m., but firefighters continued to put out hot spots.

Fire investigators have determined that the fire was accidental and started in the second-floor bedroom, officials say.

The victim has not yet been identified.

Brighton Heights residents told Channel 11 the community is devastated.

One neighbor described the day as “kind of a heavy day.”

Neighbor Amy Morgan told Channel 11 she had been friends with the man for years and met him after working on his truck years ago.

“I got goosebumps like there ain’t no way but yeah, it is sad,” Morgan said.

Another neighbor, David Bowers, told Channel 11 he heard noises coming from the home as the fire burned.

“I heard some popping noises. I thought that was kind of weird,” Bowers said. “Now I assume it was probably the glass breaking in the house.”

Bowers said he is heartbroken after learning the victim did not make it out.

“It has been kind of a weight on me knowing like man, now I cannot get to know him,” he said.

Morgan said the neighborhood is close and she hopes to talk with others about a memorial.
