Pittsburgh feels impact of deadly American Airlines plane, helicopter crash in Washington D.C.

The tragedy felt across the country has impacted Pittsburgh International Airport as local leaders respond to the ongoing incident.

“It’s a tough day, and it’s a day where we are reminded of why we do what we do every day, which is to ensure that this is a safe and secure environment for everyone,” said Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

Cassotis noted the interconnected nature of the aviation industry, explaining that when an incident occurs in one part of the world, it affects others.

“We are all on the front line of this industry. It’s very interdependent and complex. When something happens, it impacts the rest of us,” she said.

While the investigation continues, Cassotis assured the public that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is thoroughly reviewing the situation. “Every single part of this incident will be investigated and shared with everyone,” she said. “This is why aviation is a very safe industry — we all learn from each other and do not compete on safety.”

Governor Josh Shapiro has pledged support and resources to assist first responders, who are still searching in the water if needed from Pennsylvania.

Despite the tragedy, air travel at Pittsburgh International has returned to normal, with travelers expressing sympathy for the lives lost. Dave Whisler, a passenger flying from Charlotte, wasn’t concerned about flying on American Airlines.

“Flying into Pittsburgh, it’s not a high-traffic area. Obviously, DC and New York are more intense, so maybe I’d be more nervous flying there than other places, because of the compact area,” Whisler told Channel 11.

Cassotis also highlighted the strong relationship between the airport and military personnel, stressing their continued collaboration with two separate military bases sharing runway space with the airport. “We have no concerns about that,” she said.

In total, nine flights were canceled at PIT due to the tragedy in D.C.
