Pleasant Hills family concerned over ‘dangerous’ location of school bus stop

PLEASANT HILLS, Pa. — A Pleasant Hills family said they can’t move their daughter’s bus stop despite what they say is a “dangerous” location.

“If she slips and falls and a car is coming, not paying attention that’s a parent’s nightmare,” said David Rapach, a parent in the West Jefferson School District.

Rapach said his nine-year-old daughter’s bus stop at the corner of Audrey Drive and Caryl Drive is unsafe.

“It’s on a hill, it’s in somebody’s yard, there are no sidewalks, it’s a busy intersection where folks don’t pay much attention they slide through, it’s very dangerous,” he explained.

On Wednesday, we met with Rapach who showed us the bus stop and within a few minutes of standing along the road we watched several cars blow right through the stop sign.

Rapach worried that had it been school hours his daughter may have been standing.

Rapach shared with us at the beginning of the school year that he had already explained his concerns to her bus driver, the bus company, and the West Jefferson Hill School District and from October to December her stop was moved.

“It’s literally 130 feet from where she is supposed to get picked up but it’s significantly safer,” Rapach said.

The change, he said, doesn’t impact the bus route or delay other students’ pick-up times, so he was surprised when he received a call from the bus company earlier this week.

“Got the voicemail that our daughter would be picked up, up here at the unsafe location,” he said.

He again reached out to the district and the bus company, but he didn’t get a response. He was forced to drive his daughter to school. We too reached out to try to get an answer but didn’t hear back from anyone.

“I was confused as to why the school district hasn’t returned a call didn’t email me back and why they are putting a child’s safety at risk,” he told us.

Channel 11 News will continue to follow up with the district and provide an update if any changes are made.
