OHIO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A person was shot and killed by an officer on Saturday after a police chase along I-279 ended with a crash.
Pennsylvania State Police say three other people are recovering in the hospital after the crash and officer-involved shooting in Ohio Township.
Southbound I-279 is closed between I-79 and the Camp Horne Road (Exit 8) interchange while police collect evidence and reconstruct the crash. State police say the road is expected to reopen by Sunday morning.
The incident began after police began pursuing a white SUV in Butler County shortly before 8 p.m., state police say. Multiple departments chased the SUV into Allegheny County.
It’s unknown why police were chasing the vehicle.
The chase ended around mile marker nine on southbound I-279 when the SUV lost control and crashed, flipping at least two times, state police say.
Shortly afterward, one of the people inside the SUV fired at officers, state police say. An officer from one of the departments returned fire, hitting the person.
It’s unknown which department the officer who fired belongs to.
All four people who were in the SUV were taken to hospitals, state police say. The one who was shot later died, but the three others are recovering.
The people involved have not been identified.
Drivers are told to find alternate routes while southbound I-279 is closed.
Please be aware that I-279 South near mile marker 9 will be closed. Our Troop B Major Case Team is on scene and you will need to consider alternative routes at this time.
