Police chase ends with cruiser crashing into Lawrence County dog day care, officer flown to hospital

NORTH BEAVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A police chase ended with a cruiser crashing into a Lawrence County business and an officer being flown to a hospital Sunday night.

Pennsylvania State Police said the chase started in New Middletown, Ohio, around 9 p.m. in Mahoning County, less than an hour from Pittsburgh.

The chase then came into North Beaver Township in Lawrence County, where state police said the police cruiser flipped over and went into a dog boarding business near Mohawk High School.

State police said the officer did not call the chase in because he didn’t have radio contact. Someone passing by saw the crash and called 911. The officer was flown to a hospital in Ohio.

The owner of Bath and Doggy Works told Channel 11 this upscale dog hotel on Mohawk School Road has been open for about two years. Philip Gallo said he never expected to get a phone call that a police cruiser had crashed through a fence and into his business.

Gallo arrived at the site to find a police cruiser into his building, structural damage and debris, including pieces of plastic and clusters of brick on the property. Gallo said he immediately thought of the police officer, hoping he was okay.

“They said they were trying to re-enact it last night, and there’s a chance he went airborne, the way it landed and the way the whole side was hit,” Gallo said.

Gallo said he was relieved to hear the officer will be okay but described the fear of not knowing the fate of the animals inside. He showed us the damage from the inside of his business, where the cruiser crashed through a storage area, away from where the dogs sleep. Luckily, no animals or employees were hurt.

While the business is open for grooming, the daycare division is closed. Gallo plans to hire a fencing company for outside repairs and begin the process of building reconstruction.

“I’m glad everyone is okay, and pray for a better tomorrow,” Gallo said.

State police continue to investigate. They have not said if the driver of the other car has been identified or could face any charges.
