Property owner hit hard by flooding in South Strabane fears what will happen when more rain falls

SOUTH STRABANE, Pa. — Emergencies have been declared in two communities hit hard by flooding over the weekend.

We spoke to a neighbor in South Strabane who said the infrastructure in his yard worries him the most. He said if any more rain comes before they’re fixed, flooding is inevitable.

“Within 10 minutes, the water overwhelmed the sandbags and I just had to stand there and watch it happen,” Stephen Schultz said.

Schultz owns two properties along Oak Spring Road in South Strabane. He said two culverts in his backyard were crushed after Saturday night’s rainfall.

“This is ground zero for three different merge points,” said Schultz.

The culverts drain from the Old Washington Mall and the Oak Spring Plaza, where a 25-foot sinkhole opened up outside the Eat’n Park.

Because of the pipe damage, Schultz’s yard, business and home were underwater.

“This was a waterfall. With a great force, it lifted all that pavement,” he said.

He doesn’t know how he is going to fix it.

He fears that with more rain, his property will simply wash away before it can be fixed.

Schultz also filled out a damage assessment form with the fire department, which will then be sent off to PEMA with the hopes of unlocking some additional state funding.
