Scammers target Carlynton School District students with ‘fraudulent’ job offer

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Another scam promising something too good to be true: this one is targeting students at Carlynton Junior-Senior High School, who recently received a fraudulent email in their district-issued accounts.

Channel 11 obtained a copy of the email promising a “job offer” for students and staff members in the Carlynton School District. The offer claims it will pay out $550 for two to three hours of work – three times a week – but school administrators sent out an email saying this is a scam.

Administrators said a student responded to the fraudulent job advertisement and received a fake digital check in his inbox. Channel 11 talked with that student over the phone, who said he’s working with Carlynton’s Technology Department to make sure his account isn’t compromised.

In an email, school administrators said all copies of the fraudulent email were removed from students’ inboxes and that access to the affected account was secured. They said there was “No breach of the district’s student information system or any other internal database.”

Some former Carlynton students told Channel 11 they, too, received the email but were not available to speak with us on camera. Carlynton school officials said they immediately called police, who are working to identify the person responsible. Students are reminded to be vigilant, enable Multi-Factor Authentication when logging into accounts, and always verify job opportunities before applying.

Superintendent Dr. John Kreider released this statement:

“While this situation is regrettable, our technology and administrative teams responded swiftly to contain the issue and protect our students. We remain committed to ensuring a safe digital learning environment and to educating students about responsible online behavior.”
