State police investigating allegations of indecent assault against EMT involved with youth football

MARS, Pa. — A local EMT involved with a youth football program is facing an investigation over allegations of indecent assault.

11 Investigates has learned Pennsylvania State Police are investigating several allegations of “indecent assault within Adams Township.”

State Police tell Channel 11 they were first notified of the accusations the evening of Aug 24.

Because no charges have been filed, police would not identify the EMT. His employer, Quality EMS, however, did.

In a statement to 11 Investigates, the company wrote

“Quality EMS confirms that EMT Nathan Mitchell has been employed as a part-time staff member for approximately 2.5 years. He is currently on leave [...] There are no reports of allegations for known incidents in relation to EMT Mitchell during the course of his duties at Quality EMS.”

We also reached out to the Mars Area School District. Officials there say they are aware of an ongoing investigation and “The individual will not be granted access to any Mars Area School District buildings or facilities.”

This is not the first time Mitchell has faced allegations like this.

11 Investigates obtained court records that show Nathan Mitchell, then known as Joshua Werkman, pleaded “no contest” to misdemeanor child molestation in California in 2008.

Court documents show he got his case dismissed in 2011 and then petitioned for a certificate of rehabilitation and pardon in 2020. He also went through proceedings to change his name to Nathan Mitchell.

Werkman was the subject of a TMZ report on the California charges. TMZ reports that he was the manager of child actors, including Cole and Dylan Sprouse of a popular Disney kids show.

Channel 11 spoke to a Mars football mom. She told us rumors about Mitchell’s past conviction have been going around.

“Everyone is talking about it and concerned,” she said.

However, she had no idea that there were new allegations.

“Oh my God. That’s terrifying. That’s really, really concerning,” she said.

According to Quality EMS, Mitchell passed both federal and state background checks.

“As someone who also gets those clearances, I don’t understand how that’s possible,” the mom told us.

We also spoke to officials with the Mars Youth Football program. They told us they had no comment on the situation.

The Mars Area Recreational Sports Board sent the following email to youth football and cheer families:

“Based on recent reports and events, we feel that it is important to send the following message. On the evening of Sunday, August 24th, the Board was informed of an allegation of misconduct involving the EMT who had previously supported our program. The alleged incident occurred outside of our football and cheer activities, and we want to emphasize that the Board has never received any complaints or reports of inappropriate behavior during program events. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution and in alignment with our commitment to the safety of our children, the Board acted immediately. On Monday, August 25th, the individual was removed from all program activities and permanently banned from further involvement. At this time we are allowing the appropriate authorities to conduct their investigation.

“The safety and well-being of our kids is—and always will be—our top priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Board directly."

Channel 11 attempted to reach Mitchell. We called a phone number we believed belonged to him. A woman answered the phone and told us no one by either name lived there. We also attempted to knock on his door, but his home is in a gated community.
