According to a release from state police, a truck tractor was traveling eastbound on National Pike when it entered the westbound lane and struck a Ford pickup truck head-on. The pickup truck then collided head-on with a Chevrolet Express van.
The drivers of the truck tractor and pickup truck, as well as the front-seat passenger of the van, were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The District Attorney’s office said the investigation so far has been difficult.
“This is a terrible tragedy that took three lives yesterday, and we are praying for the individuals who still remain in the hospital and are recovering,” Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele said.
Shocking video shows the moment after a tractor trailer collided with a pickup truck and CSX van. The trailer went over the hill and a fire quickly started in the woods. Today, glass, broken car parts, and downed trees are all that remain. Five people are still being treated for injuries at a nearby hospital, and the DA said it’s been difficult to identify the people who were killed.
“The intensity of the fire that happened with the tractor trailer and pickup truck particularly destroyed a lot of the information. We couldn’t find a license plate for the pickup truck at the time,” Aubele said.
Aubele said weather, speed, and the hills’ curve may have all played a role in the crash.
“The tractor-trailer seems to have come across into the opposing lane of traffic, but obviously, the individual with the tractor-trailer is one of the deceased individuals. So, it doesn’t seem, at least at this point, that there is going to be any kind of prosecution,” Abuele said.
The District Attorney and state police also thanked first responders for their efforts in helping rescue people and put out the flames.
