Sto-Rox school board approves changes to playground after student wandered off, prompted search

Sto-Rox school board members approved new fencing around the Primary Center playground.

It’s the spot where a 5-year-old boy with autism and who is non-verbal, wandered away earlier this month.

The boy was eventually found by a drone in the woods nearby.

The new fencing is expected to be installed within the next month and will cost just over $16,500.

In the meantime, district officials tell Channel 11 there will be more eyes on kids while they play. In the past, just one adult had to be on the playground, now, until the fence is installed, two will be required.

“As a parent, it’s a scary moment, but it allowed us to go back and see where, if any, gaps were,” board president Cameron Culliver said.

The changes come as Allegheny County’s top prosecutor tells Channel 11’s Amy Hudak he wants answers about how the child walked away and who was supposed to be watching him.

“What I would say to the District Attorney is we know what happened. We investigated and made sure we crossed all ‘Ts’ and dotted all ‘Is.’ Our superintendent has really been on it. This isn’t going to happen again. It’s not going to happen again,” Culliver said.

As for the employee on duty at the time, we did ask Superintendent Sonya Coleman if that person faced any discipline.

“As you are aware, we’re not permitted to discuss HR matters publicly,” she told us.

District officials say the boy who wandered away has been back at school and is doing well.
