Student accused of trying to film woman in restroom at University of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — A Pitt student is facing charges after police say he followed a woman into a campus restroom and tried to record her.

“It evokes a feminine rage that all females can bond over,” Sesil Yildrim told Channel 11.

Sesil Yildrim is one of the Pitt students who spoke with Channel 11 today. She was stunned to learn that a fellow student is facing charges after police say he was recording a woman using the bathroom in Benedum Hall.

“I’m so shocked that this happened right over there in a school building, which is insane,” she said.

According to University of Pittsburgh Police officers, Pitt Honors student Yichao Gan followed a female student from class into the bathroom.

When she was in the restroom, police say she observed a phone come over the top of the stall with a camera lens of a phone pointed at her. The woman left the stall to confront Gan, then brought him to Panther Central. She told police she wanted to press charges.

When detectives questioned him, court documents say Gan told them he had a desire to see women and was curious about what they did in the restroom.

Officers didn’t take Gan into custody at the scene, and instead told him that he would be receiving criminal charges through the mail as a summons.

That means — he is not in jail.

A spokesperson for Pitt told me they did not send out an alert warning students about the incident. The spokesperson would not comment on whether the student will face disciplinary action through the university.
