Suspected cocaine found in trick-or-treat bag in Allegheny County community

INGRAM, Pa. — It’s the kind of thing every parent worries about.

Checking your child’s Halloween candy and finding something that definitely doesn’t belong.

Ingram police say a small bag of cocaine ended up in a child’s trick-or-treat bag, and neighbors say they’re shocked.

“It’s scary because you have to be really careful these days,” said Kellie Smith of Ingram.

Police say a small knotted baggie containing a white powdery substance was turned over to them after trick-or-treating.

Tests later confirmed it was cocaine.

Police say they don’t know where or how it ended up in a child’s bag.

“Who would do that? That’s ridiculous,” said Chris Szuminsky

“I remember when I was a kid, we used to get pillowcases and fill them up and dump them out and go get more,” Szuminsky said. “We didn’t have to worry about too much back then. It was like razor blades in apples and things like that, but now, who knows what’s going on.”

Officers are urging parents to check every single piece of candy and packaging their children brought home, just to be safe.

“I wouldn’t take my kids trick-or-treating because it’s gotten kind of dangerous,” Smith said, adding, “I’d rather go to the store and buy candy for them.”

Police say they’re continuing to investigate, and anyone who finds anything suspicious should contact the Ingram Borough Police Department right away at 412-921-6969.
