Man charged with shooting teen in Northview Heights calls it ‘an accident’

Teenage girl shot in the leg in Northview Heights

PITTSBURGH — A teenage girl was shot in Pittsburgh’s Northview Heights neighborhood on Sunday.

Public safety officials say police were called to the 170 block of Penfort Street around 9:30 p.m. for a single-round ShotSpotter alert.

Police found a teenage girl outside who’d been shot in the leg. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Per online court records, Hassan Said Abdi was later arrested and charged with the shooting.

A criminal complaint claims both the victim and Abdi said the shooting was an accident.

The victim said the gun went off as he was changing out the gun’s magazine.

Abdi told police that he had previously loaded a round into the chamber, then forgot, per the complaint. He said the gun went off as he began to “click it.”

The gun, which Abdi claimed to have bought from a friend a year ago, was reported stolen in 2022, the complaint states.

Abdi is facing several charges, including aggravated assault and receiving stolen property.
