Westmoreland County community dealing with heavy snowfall with 1 less plow truck

LIGONIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — When the snow is falling on a day like Thursday, Ligonier Township typically has seven trucks plowing and salting the roadways. But for the last two weeks, the township has had to deal with just six as one has been out of commission. The township said that hasn’t changed their priority to make sure roads around the township are safe.

“It’s 50/50 on the roads,” said Mike Ray, who lives in Ligonier. He spoke with Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek on Thursday in the Ligonier diamond.

He’s ready for winter to be over.

“It’s cold, miserable, and ugly! It needs to go,” Ray said.

Just up the road in Ligonier Township, the township manager said this winter has been frustrating for several reasons, one being the township is down one of it’s plow trucks, and is waiting for the right part to fix it.

“Unfortunately the last time the part showed up, it wasn’t the right part in the box, so you know, we’re at the mercy of our suppliers,” said Michael Strelic, Ligonier Township Manager.

Because of that, the township had to rework some of the routes to make sure all of the roads were treated by just six trucks. Crews have been working on the roads all day to keep up with the snowfall that started in the morning hours on Thursday and continued most of the day.

“We’re out all day, hopefully we can get done at a normal time, but I suspect there will be some overtime today because we’ll be out till the job’s done,” Strelic said.

This month, Ligonier has seen snowfall that has required crews to be out nearly every single day. Strelic said it’s been tough needing to have drivers working late hours, and then sometimes having to call them back early in the morning to treat the roads.

“This kind of winter is the worst,” he said. “I’d rather just get a foot and get it over with rather than an inch a day, every day, for 12 days. We’re out, we’re doing great work out there, but we’re not hitting our other projects. We have stuff do to that I’d like to do, instead of just plowing snow every day.”

He also had a message for drivers who are out with the salt trucks.

“I saw someone last week tailgating a salt truck that was spreading rock salt. Don’t be that person,” Strelic said. “I’m sure she had a bad time and dents all over her car, so please people, use common sense.”
