Police were called to the area of North Saint Clair Street and Broad Street near Garland Park around 11:45 p.m. after two separate ShotSpotter alerts, which totaled 14 rounds.
While officers were on their way to the scene, several calls came in to 911 reporting that multiple people had been shot.
Pittsburgh medics transported three victims to the hospital: One person with a gunshot wound was listed in critical condition, a second person with a gunshot wound was listed in serious condition, but later listed in critical condition. Police identified them as adult men and said in an update around 3 p.m. that they’re now stable.
A third person, a 17-year-old girl, had a graze wound and was listed in stable condition.
Police said a short time later, two other shooting victims, a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, arrived at Children’s Hospital. Both were listed in stable condition.
Around ten other people with graze wounds or minor injuries from falling were treated at the scene by medics, public safety officials said.
The Violent Crime Unit is investigating, and the Mobile Crime Unit was called to the scene to process evidence, including recovered shell casings. They are also looking at any and all available footage of the incident.
There have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
“This incident over the weekend does not reflect a city in chaos,” said Press Secretary Olga George.
The mayor’s office later addressed the violent events that marked the end of the first weekend of summer.
“Let me be clear: there is no place for this kind of violence in our communities,” stated Cydney Cooper, Communication Director for Mayor Ed Gainey’s office.
The office confirmed that they are working with law enforcement to aid in the ongoing investigation while remaining committed to funding community organizations focused on non-violence to help prevent such incidents. They emphasized that programs like the Reach organization are making a difference.
“The only time people think about the violence fund is when events like these occur. Many do not realize how much work these organizations do to prevent violence,” George stated.
Joe Neutrelle, who lives and works in East Liberty, said he frequently visits Garland Park and does not perceive the area as violent.
“It’s pretty mild; it is mellow. A lot of my co-workers actually go to this park on their lunch breaks, enjoying the nice weather,” Neutrelle said. “You see kids playing here all the time. My co-workers utilize the tennis courts and basketball courts.”
