Man shot while trying to get into another person’s car outside of UPMC McKeesport hospital

McKEESPORT, Pa. — A man was shot outside of UPMC McKeesport hospital on Tuesday morning when he tried to get into another person’s car.

Allegheny County police say they were called to the hospital on Fifth Avenue at 3:36 a.m.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found a man who had been shot. He is in critical condition.

The shooting happened at the entrance to the emergency room parking lot. Police said that a person arrived to pick up one of their family members from the hospital when a man tried to get in the car on the passenger side and kick in the door. The driver then pulled out a gun and fired multiple times, hitting the man trying to get in.

Police said the driver and the man did not know each other. It was unknown why he was trying get in the vehicle.

Detectives later learned that a UPMC Police officer fired multiple shots, but it doesn’t appear that anyone was hit by their gunfire.

UPMC sent the following statement to Channel 11 regarding the shooting:

“An incident involving two individuals occurred outside the Emergency Department at UPMC McKeesport. The incident escalated with shots fired and one of the individuals involved struck. UPMC Police in the ED responded swiftly to help contain the incident to the parking lot, aiding local police in apprehending the individual responsible. No one else was injured.”

Our Channel 11 crew on the scene could see nearly a dozen evidence markers on the ground and police tape surrounding a white car.

Allegheny County Police said all individuals are accounted for and there is no danger to the public.

The emergency room has reopened. UPMC said Magee-Womens Specialty Services, located inside the hospital, will be closed to patients on Tuesday after sustaining damage during the shooting.

Police continue to investigate.
