Temperatures to warm into 40s Thursday with mix of sun, clouds

PITTSBURGH — Our milder end to January continues with highs today well into the 40s. Sun will become more filtered as the day wears on, with cloudy skies expected this evening.

The next system will bring us rounds of rain starting around midnight tonight and lasting off and on into the day Friday. It won’t be a washout, but there may be brief periods that rain comes down a little harder, with a half inch or less total across most of the area. Areas east of Pittsburgh that have a few inches of snow on the ground may have to watch for an increase in streams and creeks especially with possible ice jams.

A brief round of colder air will move in late Friday night, dropping highs into the 30s on Saturday. That won’t last long as another surge of warm air is expected early next week, with highs reaching the 50s again on Monday.

There will be another cool down sometime toward the end of next week that may have a little more staying power, but in general, the weather pattern will favor well above average temperatures as we kick off the new month.
