Massive sinkhole opens up outside UPMC Passavant

McCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A massive sinkhole has opened up outside UPMC Passavant.

It’s located on Cumberland Road, just off Babcock Boulevard in McCandless Township.

PennDOT officials announced Sunday that Cumberland Road is closed in both directions between Babcock Boulevard and Cumberland Woods Drive.

Township officials say the hospital is still accessible through the Babcock Boulevard entrance and from the Peebles Road side of Cumberland Road.

The township provided this map of detours:

Channel 11 reached out to UPMC to see if this situation will have any other impact on hospital operations. A spokesperson sent the following statement:

“UPMC Passavant’s services remain fully operational and unaffected by the sinkhole on Cumberland Road near the hospital’s McCandless campus. All hospital entrances remain open and accessible to EMS, patients, visitors, and staff. The only closure at this time is the one-way exit to Cumberland Road from the Blue/Yellow parking lot. The issue was caused by an underground stormwater drain that eroded over time and gave way following heavy rainfall. UPMC Passavant is coordinating the necessary repair work and will continue to coordinate with McCandless Township.”

The McCandless Township police chief tells us he didn’t believe the weather caused the sinkhole.

No injuries were reported.
